Limits to magnetic quantum criticality from nuclear spins

چکیده

The phenomenology of quantum phase transitions concerns physics at low temperatures and energies, corresponding solid-state experiments often reach millikelvin temperatures. However, this is a scale where in many solids the influence nuclear spins their hyperfine interaction no longer negligible. This may limit observability electronic critical phenomena. Here we discuss how continuous magnetic get influenced, modified, or destroyed by coupling to spins. We use simple yet paradigmatic spin models for criticality determine modifications diagram, excitation spectrum, thermodynamics due presence estimate crossover scales below which purely observable, novel emerging Our results are relevant variety compounds displaying and, more generally, highlight sensitivity systems small perturbations.

Polarization of nuclear spins from the conductance of quantum wire.

We devise an approach to measure the polarization of nuclear spins via conductance measurements. Specifically, we study the combined effect of external magnetic field, nuclear spin polarization, and Rashba spin-orbit interaction on the conductance of a quantum wire. Nonequilibrium nuclear spin polarization affects the electron energy spectrum making it time dependent. Changes in the extremal po...

Quantum Computing with Nuclear Spins in Semiconductors

The successful implementation of a scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computer would introduce a type of information processing more powerful than any available today. Reciprocally, the discovery of a fundamental obstacle to such a system would be an important advance in the foundations of quantum theory. No such fundamental obstacles are currently known, but neither has any architecture been sho...

Magnetic quantum criticality in the iron pnictides

The prominence of antiferromagnetic ordering in the phase diagram of the iron pnictides naturally raises the question of the relevance of magnetic quantum criticality. We address this issue in the undoped parent compounds using the fact that they are “bad metals.” Localized magnetic moments with frustrating interactions, which model the incoherent electronic excitations, are coupled to the itin...

Criticality in inhomogeneous magnetic systems: application to quantum ferromagnets.

We consider a phi4 theory with a position-dependent distance from the critical point. One realization of this model is a classical ferromagnet subject to nonuniform mechanical stress. We find a sharp phase transition where the envelope of the local magnetization vanishes uniformly. The first-order transition in a quantum ferromagnet also remains sharp. The universal mechanism leading to a tricr...

Coherent Magnetic Moment Reversal in Small Particles with Nuclear Spins

Small magnetic particles have now been investigated as good candidates for experimental observation of macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) and coherence (MQC). This is because at first sight the main critera for a system to be a good candidate for seeing MQP (P for phenomena) are met. One of these is that the energy barrier through which the system must tunnel be microscopic, even though the tu...
